For most brake jobs, yes. Pads, rotors and calipers do not need a shop lift, so a mobile mechanic can do the same work in your driveway. National 2026 figures put mobile brake pad jobs at about $150 to $350, against $200 to $450 at a repair shop. Mobile is not worth it when the car needs rusted brake lines run end to end, ABS work that needs a lift and special tools, or an alignment in the same visit.
Worth Knowing
- Pads, rotors, calipers and most hoses are normal driveway work
- Typical 2026 brake pad price is $150 to $350 mobile and $200 to $450 at a shop, per AutoNation Mobile Service
- You skip the tow, the waiting room and the ride home
- Full brake line runs on a rusty Michigan car, ABS faults and alignment work are often better in a shop
- Michigan certifies mechanics in a brakes category and requires a written estimate before work starts
We do a lot of brake jobs in driveways and parking lots around Westland. People ask us the same thing almost every week. Is it really as good as taking it to a shop? For the normal brake job, yes. The work is the same. The parts are the same. What changes is where the car sits while it gets done.
But mobile is not the right call for every brake problem. This page tells you which jobs fit a driveway, which ones do not, what the money looks like, and the Michigan rules that protect you no matter who you call.
What a Mobile Brake Job Really Is
A standard brake job is wheels off, old pads and rotors out, slides cleaned and greased, new parts in, wheels torqued. None of that needs a lift. A floor jack, jack stands, hand tools and a torque wrench do the job. That is why brakes are one of the most common jobs mobile mechanics do.
These usually fit in a driveway.
- Pads and rotors. Front, rear or both. This is the bread and butter job.
- Calipers. A seized or dragging caliper gets swapped and the system gets bled.
- Brake hoses. The rubber hoses near each wheel are bolt on parts.
- Brake fluid. Old fluid out, fresh fluid in, air bled from the lines.
- An inspection. Pad thickness, rotor condition, leaks and fluid, checked where the car sits.
A mobile brake job saves you more than money. A car that grinds or pulls when you brake is a car you should not drive across town to a shop. When the mechanic comes to the car, that risky drive never happens.
The Money. Mobile vs Shop
AutoNation Mobile Service publishes a side by side table in its 2026 mobile mechanic cost guide. It also says mobile mechanics charge slightly less than shops for most jobs, mainly because they do not pay for a building.
| Job | Typical Mobile Price | Typical Shop Price |
|---|---|---|
| Brake pad replacement | $150 to $350 | $200 to $450 |
| Mobile labor per hour | $80 to $170 | Not listed |

The price on paper is only half of it. A shop brake job also costs you a drive there, a wait or a second ride, and a pickup. If the car is not safe to drive, add a tow. With a mobile job you hand over the keys and keep your day.
What moves the price either way is the same. Pads only or pads and rotors. One axle or both. A basic part or a premium one. Ask about each of those and two quotes become easy to compare.
When Mobile Brake Service Is Not Worth It
A good mobile mechanic will tell you when a job belongs in a shop. We would say so in these cases.
- Rusted steel brake lines, end to end. Michigan salt eats the hard lines that run under the car. A short section near a wheel can often be done on site. A full run from front to back is long, fussy work that goes better on a lift.
- ABS and stability faults. Some ABS units need a scan tool routine to bleed. Some sit deep in the engine bay. Get a diagnosis first, then decide where the repair happens.
- Brakes plus suspension plus alignment. If the car also needs control arms or tie rods, it needs an alignment rack after. That part has to happen at a shop.
- No safe place to work. A brake job needs flat, solid ground. A sloped gravel driveway or a lot that bans repairs is a problem. Ask your landlord or lot owner first.
The rust point matters here more than most places. AAA reports that salt and chemical de-icers cost U.S. drivers about $3 billion a year in rust repairs, with a repair bill near $500 each time. It names brake lines on the list of parts at risk, and it says a soft brake pedal is a sign to get the car checked right away.
The Michigan Rules That Protect You
National pages skip this part. If your car is in Westland or anywhere in Michigan, state law gives you real protection on a brake job.
- Brakes are a certified category. Michigan certifies mechanics by repair category, and automobile and light truck brakes and braking systems is one of them. Under MCL 257.1311, renewing that certificate takes a passed test, approved training, or a current certification from a group like ASE. It is fair to ask any mechanic, mobile or shop, if they hold it.
- A written estimate comes first. MCL 257.1332 says a repair facility must give you a written, itemized estimate before work starts. Without your okay, it cannot go over that estimate by more than 10% or $50, whichever is less, unless you signed a waiver.
- You get a written statement of repairs. Under MCL 257.1307, when the car is handed back you should get a statement that lists the work, the estimate, the actual cost, and every part replaced. It has to say if each part is new OEM, new, used, rebuilt or reconditioned. It also names the mechanic who did the work.
Our take is simple. Those rules make it easy to compare a mobile mechanic and a shop on equal terms. Same paper, same rights. If someone will not put the quote in writing, call someone else.
A Five Minute Check Before You Book
- Describe the sound and the feel. Squeal, grind, pull, pulse or soft pedal. Each points to a different part.
- Ask what the price covers. Pads only, or pads and rotors. Front, rear or both.
- Ask about the parts. New or rebuilt calipers, and what grade of pads.
- Ask about the brakes category. Is the mechanic certified for brakes in Michigan?
- Get the total in writing. Parts, labor, any trip charge and tax.
- Check the spot. Flat ground, room to work around all four wheels, and okay from the lot owner.

Leftover Questions
- Is mobile brake service worth it?
- For most pad, rotor and caliper jobs, yes. The work is the same as a shop, you skip the tow and the wait, and national 2026 figures put mobile brake pad jobs at $150 to $350 against $200 to $450 at shops, per AutoNation Mobile Service. It is not worth it for full brake line runs on a rusty car, ABS work that needs a lift, or jobs that need an alignment.
- How much should a mobile mechanic charge to change brake pads?
- AutoNation Mobile Service's 2026 guide lists $150 to $350 for a mobile brake pad replacement. Pads only on one axle sits near the bottom. Pads and rotors, both axles or premium parts push it up. Get the total in writing before the work starts.
- Can a mobile mechanic replace brakes in my driveway?
- Yes. A standard brake job needs a jack, jack stands, hand tools and a torque wrench, not a lift. You need flat, solid ground with room around each wheel, and permission if you are in a rented lot.
- Are mobile mechanics any good?
- A good one is as good as a good shop tech. In Michigan, ask if the mechanic is certified in the brakes and braking systems category, ask for a written estimate, and expect a written statement of repairs that lists every part when the job is done.
- How important is a brake fluid service?
- It matters. Brake fluid picks up moisture over time, which can make the pedal feel soft and lets rust start inside the system. Follow the interval in your owner's manual, and get the car checked right away if the pedal feels soft or sinks.
