Yes, you can call AAA if you're not a member. You join on the phone. In Michigan, the club's own guide says new members wait 3 days for roadside help, or pay a same-day service fee to use it sooner. Same-day help comes at the Classic level. That plan costs $79 a year and tows you 5 miles, or to the AAA shop that took the call.
Worth Knowing
- Michigan is served by AAA The Auto Club Group, and its rules differ from other AAA clubs
- Classic is $79, Plus is $117 and Premier is $144 a year, and dues can vary by zip code
- Join today and you get Classic level help today, even if you pay for Plus or Premier
- The Classic tow covers 5 miles or the responding AAA shop. Extra miles are billed at the tow company's rate
- AAA roadside does minor fixes with no parts. A mobile mechanic can bring the part and fix it where it sits
You've probably heard you have to be a member before AAA will help. That's a myth. AAA's own roadside page says a non-member can call 800-222-4357 and get help. The catch is the price, and in Michigan the catch has its own rules.
That page is from a AAA club out west. It serves Alaska, Arizona, Northern California, Montana, Nevada, Utah and Wyoming. Its $75 fee is not the Michigan number. Michigan drivers are covered by AAA The Auto Club Group, a different club with a different rule book.
We fix no-starts in driveways and parking lots around Westland. Below is what really happens on that AAA call, what it costs, and when a different call costs less.
What Happens When You Call AAA Without a Card
You don't get help as a guest. You join on the call, then you get help as a brand new member.
The Auto Club Group's member guide covers Michigan and seven other Midwest states. It sets three rules for new members.
- There's a 3 day wait. Roadside benefits start three days after you join.
- You can skip the wait for a fee. A same-day service fee applies if you need help before the 3 days are up.
- Early help is Classic help. Service before the wait ends is at the Classic level, whatever plan you bought.
The guide doesn't print the fee amount. Other AAA clubs post theirs. AAA Club Alliance charges a $65 same-day fee that can't be refunded. The western club lists $75. Ask the agent for the Michigan number before you give a card number.
You Have to Be With the Car
The guide says the member must be with the disabled vehicle when service happens. Bring your card and a photo ID. If AAA can't confirm your membership, you pay the tow company's own rate on the spot.
The good news is that coverage follows you, not the car. It works on any licensed and registered car you're driving or riding in.
What Joining on the Spot Really Costs
The Auto Club Group lists three plans on its plan page. It notes the price can change with your home zip code.
| Plan | Yearly Dues | Tow Once the Wait Ends |
|---|---|---|
| Classic | $79 | 5 miles, or the responding AAA shop |
| Plus | $117 | Up to 100 miles |
| Premier | $144 | One tow up to 200 miles, then 100 miles each |

Now add it up for a breakdown today. Say you join Classic on the call. You pay $79 plus the same-day fee. You get a tow to the shop that sent the truck, or anywhere within 5 miles. If your own mechanic is farther away, the guide says you pay for the extra miles at the tow company's private rate.
Each main member gets 4 service calls a year. Added family members get 2. One breakdown counts as one call.
Why Buying Plus at the Roadside Won't Help Today
A lot of callers get caught here. Say you're stuck in a lot in Canton, and your shop is 20 miles away. So you buy Plus for the 100 mile tow. It sounds smart.
It doesn't work that way. The member guide says same-day help is Classic level. It also says there's a 3 day wait before upgraded Plus or Premier services begin. So today you still get the 5 mile tow. You just paid more for it.
Plus can be a fine buy for next winter. It isn't a fix for this afternoon. Buy the plan you want for the year, not for the next hour.
What AAA Roadside Does and Doesn't Fix
AAA is mostly a tow and battery service. Its newsroom says it took over 27 million roadside calls in 2024. About 13 million needed a tow. About 7 million were battery problems.
The member guide is clear about the rest. Its "mechanical first aid" covers minor fixes that don't need parts or supplies, and AAA says it can't guarantee those fixes. Jump starts, flat tire changes, lockouts and fuel are covered. A bad starter, a dead alternator or a broken belt is not something the truck fixes. It gets towed.
And the tow only moves the problem. You still pay a shop to fix it.
When a Mobile Mechanic Beats the AAA Call
Think about what's wrong before you join anything. A few cases point away from the tow truck.
- The car won't start at home or work. It's parked and safe. A mechanic can test the battery, starter and alternator right there.
- You know it needs a part. AAA's first aid doesn't use parts. A mobile mechanic brings the part.
- Your shop is past 5 miles. On a same-day Classic join, every mile past 5 is on you.
- It's after shop hours. The AAA guide says the driver can't drop the car at a closed shop unless you're there to take it.
Call AAA when the car is in a dangerous spot, like a freeway shoulder, or it's stuck in a ditch. Safety comes first. Get the car moved, then sort out the repair.
Whoever does the repair, Michigan law protects you. MCL 257.1332 says a repair facility must give you a written estimate before work starts. Ask for it.
Other Places Your Roadside Help May Hide
Before you join AAA in a hurry, check what you already pay for. AAA's own guide for non-members points to two of them.
- Your car insurance. Roadside may be an add-on to your policy. Ask your insurer.
- Your credit card. Some cards offer roadside help, sometimes for a fee per call. Look in the card's benefits guide.
Each of those can beat a same-day join. None of them fixes the car where it sits, either.

Leftover Questions
- Can I call AAA if I am not a member?
- Yes. Call 800-222-4357 and you can join on the call. In Michigan, AAA The Auto Club Group's member guide says new members wait 3 days for roadside help or pay a same-day service fee to get it sooner. Same-day help is at the Classic level.
- How much is AAA if you're not a member?
- You pay for a membership plus a same-day fee. The Auto Club Group lists Classic at $79, Plus at $117 and Premier at $144 a year, and dues can vary by zip code. Its guide doesn't print the same-day fee, so ask the agent. Other AAA clubs charge $65 or $75.
- How long before I can use AAA after joining?
- Three days in Michigan, per The Auto Club Group's member guide. You can use it sooner if you pay the same-day service fee. Upgraded Plus and Premier benefits also start 3 days after you buy them.
- Can you call AAA if you don't have your card?
- Yes, but AAA has to confirm you're a member. The guide asks for your card and a photo ID. If your membership can't be verified, you pay the tow company's own rate for the service.
- Can I call AAA for someone else if I'm not there?
- Not on your membership. The member has to be with the car when help arrives. Coverage follows the person, so a family member with their own card on your plan can call for their own breakdown.
- Will AAA tow my car to my own mechanic?
- Only within your plan's limit. Classic tows 5 miles or to the AAA shop that responds. Plus covers up to 100 miles. Past the limit, you pay the extra miles at the tow company's rate.
